OpenStack's REST API is rather powerful, but there are many parts of it that are at best understood mostly via tribal lore and stories around a campfire. In this session we're going to take a few seemingly basic operations, such as booting a VM, and dive deep into each bit of the API to fully understand how all the pieces hang together.

By the end you should *fully* understand client configuration, the difference between openrc and clouds.yaml, authentication, the service catalog and version discovery. You should be able to use that knowledge to poke at any OpenStack service API. Depending on time we should be able to dive in to at least one or two confusing scenarios of your own.

This is a super deep dive into a portion of the OpenStack API that most of the time is hidden, and then an application of that to geting stuff done. If you've ever been confused about how an interaction works, what's really going on or how to figure out what broke with your application, this session is for you.

Note: This session is not about writing Heat templates. If you want to do that, Florian has a session going on at the same time you should check out.

Prerequisites: You will need to bring a laptop that can run python code - and on which you can install python libraries. Examples/exercises will use curl and/or python but should be applicable to other languages.
